Once you have determined the type of licence you would like to apply for, you need to get the relevant application form from one of the Transport Authority offices or download it from our website. This should be filled out and submitted with the relevant documents and fee for the type of licence.

Persons who need a licence to transport goods should apply for a commercial carriers licence. There are two types of commercial licences: public carriers and private carriers.

Persons who wish to change the route on which they operate should first check with our Research Department to find out what routes are available. They should then write a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Transport Authority requesting a change of route or extension of route. The letter should also state the reason for the change or extension. The letter and a copy of the current licence should then be submitted to the Transport Authority. A fee of $2,000 is to be paid.

A Private Carrier's licence is used for the carriage of goods for or in connection with any trade or business carried on by the owner. A Public Carrier's licence is used for the carriage of goods for hire or reward.

 

 

•  What is the difference between a Hackney Carriage and Route Taxi?

A Hackney carriage is a vehicle used for carrying passengers for hire or reward (charter) and which stands or plies for hire on thoroughfares or places frequented by the public. The vehicle must have a seating accommodation for no more than four (4) persons (including the driver). A route taxi is a public passenger vehicle which seats no more than ten (10) passengers and which operates as a stage carriage (plies a specific route).

 

 

•  Can I operate with the receipt after submitting the application?

A receipt is NOT a road licence and therefore is not to be used as a basis for operating. A receipt is only an indication that the individual has made an application for a road licence. It does not mean that this application has or will be approved. Therefore persons operating with a receipt run the risk of prosecution.

•  How do I surrender my road licence?

Persons who are no longer interested in having a road licence should write a letter addressed to the Transport Authority stating that they wish to surrender their road licence. This letter and the licence should then be submitted to the Transport Authority. The Transport Authority will then give the individual a letter addressed to the tax office to make the necessary adjustments to their registration. It must be noted that if the person who has surrendered the licence is interested in getting a road licence at a later date, he/she will be required to reapply for the licence.

 

 

•  How do I apply for a road licence on a plan?

Persons may apply for a road licence prior to acquiring the motor vehicle. The applicant should fill out the relevant application form and submit same along with a pro forma Invoice : giving the description of the vehicle the applicant intends to use in the system. The applicant should then purchase the vehicle and submit the required documents for the processing of new application for approval.

 

 

•  How do I apply for a concession?

Persons applying for a concession should write a letter addressed to the Transport Authority requesting the concession. The relevant application form and documents along with a pro forma invoice for the vehicle should also be submitted. These applicants are also required to pay the full fee for the licence being applied for.

 


•  How do I get a refund of my money if I am no longer interested in getting a road licence after submitting my application?

Persons who are no longer interested in getting a road licence after submitting their application may apply for a refund if the road licence has not been processed. These persons should write a letter addressed to the Transport Authority requesting a refund. This should be submitted with the original receipt received on payment of the application fee.

 

 

•  How do I get a refund of my storage fees if my case is dismissed in court?

Persons whose vehicles are seized and have their cases dismissed in court may be entitled to a refund. These persons should write a letter addressed to the Transport Authority requesting a refund of their storage fees. This should be submitted along with the letter from the court and the receipt for payment of the fees.
